Good Talks: The origins of pleasure (Paul Bloom) / Psychology Yale Course

Psychologist Paul Bloom argues that human beings are essentialists — that our beliefs about the history of an object change how we experience it, not simply as an illusion, but as a deep feature of what pleasure (and pain) is.

Professor Paul Bloom teaches a popular Yale University course:

Introduction to Psychology with Professor Paul Bloom

About the Course
What do your dreams mean? Do men and women differ in the nature and intensity of their sexual desires? Can apes learn sign language? Why can’t we tickle ourselves? This course tries to answer these questions and many others, providing a comprehensive overview of the scientific study of thought and behavior. It explores topics such as perception, communication, learning, memory, decision-making, religion, persuasion, love, lust, hunger, art, fiction, and dreams. We will look at how these aspects of the mind develop in children, how they differ across people, how they are wired-up in the brain, and how they break down due to illness and injury.

Good Talks: What hallucination reveals about our minds (neurologist and author Oliver Sacks)

About this talk:

Neurologist and author Oliver Sacks talks about the “Charles Bonnet Syndrome” – when visually impaired people experience lucid hallucinations.

“We see with the eyes. But we see with the brain as well. And seeing with the brain is often called imagination. And we are familiar with the landscapes of our own imagination, our inscapes. We’ve lived with them all our lives. But there are also hallucinations as well. And hallucinations are completely different. They don’t seem to be of our creation. They don’t seem to be under our control. They seem to come from the outside, and [seem] to mimic perception.”

Good Talks: Why are we happy? (Dan Gilbert) [synthetic happiness]

Daniel Gilbert is Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. He is the author of the international bestseller Stumbling on Happiness.

(…)
“The lesson I want to leave you with from these data is that our longings and our worries are both to some degree overblown, because we have within us the capacity to manufacture the very commodity we are constantly chasing when we choose experience.”
